Fall Motorcycle Maintenance & Touring Checklist

Why a Fall Maintenance & Touring Checklist Matters

Fall is the turning point of the riding year. The days get shorter, the morning air gets sharper, and every mile feels different than it did in July. It is also the moment when the bikes that get one last careful check ride smooth through autumn and start right up next spring — while the ones that get skipped often spend the winter leaking, drained, or waiting on a shop.

A fall maintenance & touring checklist is not about fixing what is broken. It is about catching what is wearing out before it leaves you on the side of a cold road, and about making the last long rides of the season genuinely comfortable. This checklist walks you through five checks: fluids and seals, wind protection, comfort, storage, and controls. No special tools required — just an hour with your bike and a plan.

1. Change Your Oil & Check the Fluids Before Cold Weather

Before the temperature drops, give your bike a fluid refresh. Change the oil so old, dirty oil does not sit in the engine all winter. Check the brake fluid level and condition, top up coolant if your model uses it, and inspect the seals and hardware around your oiling and cooling lines — cold weather makes worn rubber seals and loose hardware fail faster than summer does.

While the oil is draining is the perfect moment to swap the filter too. If you ride a Harley big twin, a MotorFactory Chrome Oil Filter is a direct, easy upgrade; the RecTech Magnetic Chrome Oil Filter adds a magnetic drain to catch metal debris over the winter months. For the full routine — filters, seals, and hardware together — start at the Maintenance collection or jump straight to Oil Filters.

2. Beat the Chill — Wind Protection for Cooler Rides

Cold-weather comfort starts before you ever sit down. The difference between a comfortable 200-mile autumn ride and a miserable one is often just wind protection. Check the fairing and windshield you already have for cracks, loose mounting, and worn seals — then decide whether your current setup is doing enough to keep cold air off your chest, hands, and legs.

If you want more coverage for cooler rides, a batwing outer fairing is the classic Touring upgrade. The Custom Chrome Gloss Black Front Batwing Outer Fairing gives Street Glide and Electra Glide riders a clean, paint-ready shell, while a Gloss Black Speedometer Cover Inner Fairing cleans up the cockpit. On older Touring models, Gloss Black Lower Vented Fairings with Glove Box deflect wind and rain off your legs while adding handy storage. Browse the full range of Bodywork & Fairings, Inner & Outer Fairings, and Inner Fairings.

3. Long-Distance Comfort — Seats & Backrests

If autumn is your long-ride season, seat comfort is the single biggest upgrade you can make. After a full season of riding, a seat that felt fine in spring can start to feel thin by fall — and the colder you get, the more you feel every bump. Think about how your seat and backrest held up over the season: does your back still feel supported after a full tank, and would your passenger want to come along for a long weekend?

For riders who want more support for long days, the C.C. RIDER One-Piece 2-Up Touring Seat is a clean daily-rider option, and the C.C. RIDER Gel Touring Seat Two-Piece 2-Up adds gel padding where it counts. Add a C.C. RIDER Rider Backrest for lower-back support on long miles, or a C.C. RIDER King Passenger Backrest if your passenger rides with you. Everything from driver backrests to passenger pads lives in the Harley Touring Seats & Backrests, Passenger Backrests, and Seats & Backrests collections.

Not sure which seat fits your Harley? Check our Harley Seat Fitment Guide for a step-by-step fitment check before you order.

4. Pack for the Trip — Saddlebags & Touring Trunks

Autumn trips need more than a spring ride does: extra layers, rain gear, tools, maybe a weekender bag. Before you leave, check how much storage your bike really has — and whether the bags and trunk you already run are up to a multi-day trip.

For riders who want serious touring capacity, a tour pak is the classic answer. The Custom Chrome 13.7" Gloss Black King Tour Pak adds a full-size trunk with a clean gloss finish, while the Custom Chrome 5.5" Razor Tour Pak is the low-profile option. If you ride a bike without hard bags and want a soft, easy option, the La Rosa Design Canvas Swing-Arm Saddlebag adds storage without a mount kit. Start with the Saddlebags & Trunks collection, or go straight to Touring Trunks and Saddlebags.

5. Stay in Control — Handlebars, Foot Controls & Protection

While you are working through the checklist, look at how the bike fits you now that the season has changed. Layers change how you reach the bars, and colder feet change how you want the pegs. These are quick, additive upgrades you can bundle into the same order.

An 8" Rise 1-1/4" T-Bar Handlebars can put the bars where your hands want them, and Anti-Slip Rider Footboards give your feet a wider, more stable platform in wet autumn weather. If you ride any time the roads get slick, an Engine Guard Crash Bar doubles as leg protection and crash protection. Browse Handlebars, Body Protection & Guards, and Foot Controls to round out your setup.
